“Whistleblower” Richard Colvin’s story unraveling

Brian Lilley has a great breakdown on the Richard Colvin story. He is the Canadian diplomat who testified before the Commons Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan that Canadian-transferred detainees were all tortured in Afghan jails.

Lilley cites Christie Blatchford’s story (see here) on Colvin’s time line in reporting torture to his superiors. He also shows us how upset the Red Cross is with Colvin. (see story here)

Absolutely … His bosses tried to save him and so did the government, but he has now been exposed as the stubborn lefty he is. NO ONE at a diplomatic post EVER cc’s 75 people unless they have totally lost it! This is soooo not the way to work and effect change. And now, it is clear that he was trying to make himself a little hero AFTER the government was working on a fix. He was generously over-promoted to his current post, but did not stop! Oh no … His affidavit and testimony are totally career-ending moves, as they should be. Diplomats MUST appreciate that they are neutral messengers, must be aware of politics and must protect their country, whatever the government policy of the day. He knows how free and open INTERNAL discussions work and was in on those talks. There was never a big smoking gun that he revealed at all. Duh – who knew that Afghan prisons do not have exercise yards, great food and TV.

I will look forward to his pathetic lawsuit when he is assigned to the cafeteria. It is hard to see how he could possibly be effective anymore, and the Liberals will just throw him under a bus soon as they slide into Kyoto-gate or whatever fake scandal is next.

No, it’s not whether Richard Colvin is right or wrong. It’s that the Conservative government refused to give the parliamentary committee that heard Colvin uncensored materials so that the committee could investigate the merit of Colvin’s comments. The government appears to have something to hide.

After reading Christie Blatchford’s column, hearing countering testimony and also reading comments from the Red Cross, I am of the opinion that Colvin is one of these self-righteous-types who are convinced of their own version of truth. I have no doubt he is sincere, but I think he lacks perspective . . . and this in itself would call his testimony and his professionalism into question.

Give them those materials for what reason? Haven’t you been paying attention here? Colvin’s credibility is shot just going by the facts that have come to light so far…giving the Liberals and NDP access to classified documents would not only be a national security nightmare (you’d trust these clowns with that kind of potentially life-threatening information? Really?..), it would be an exact repeat of the cringe-inducing debacle we suffered at the hands of Pat Martin and others when they tried to use Karlheinz Schreiber and Brian Mulroney to somehow embarrass Stephen Harper ( still trying to figure out exactly how *that* was supposed to work).

The government appears to have something to hide.

The government isn’t about to give the opposition parties another free opportunity to try and embarrass them at the expense of the Canadian public, no. Nice try, though…
