Letter of complaint about CP’s Jennifer Ditchburn’s CBC conflict of interest

Attention:

Canadian Press: Patti Tasko Senior Supervising Editor, Scott White Editor-in-Chief

CBC Ombudsman: Kirk LaPoint

Canadian Press reporter Jennifer Ditchburn and her conflict of interest with the CBC

In Jennifer Ditchburn’s article “CBC contributes $3.7B in gross value to Canadian economy: report” she fails to disclose her own relationship as a paid panellist for such CBC shows as “At Issue” and “Power and Politics” thus leaving her readers without any knowledge of her potential bias.

My complaint is two-part:

1)      What is the policy of Canadian Press on full disclosure in the matters of financial relationships in which your journalists are involved?

2)      Did Ditchburn get “fed” this self-serving CBC story from a CBC employee with whom she has a conflicting relationship?

Please respond

Vancouver riots, politicians pander, cops look for scapegoats and media blameless

The grandstanding started last night with some BC politicians lamely Tweeting people not to riot like those who follow them on Twitter would be tossing Molotov cocktails and looting The Bay.

Then this morning we have the likes of Liberal interim leader Bob Rae and Liberal Premier Christy Clark calling for an inquiry.

Next Vancouver police chief Jim Chu trots out the same meme that Christy Clark floated earlier that this was all caused by a few “criminals, anarchists and thugs”. I guess Chu didn’t see all the Canucks jerseys being worn by rioters. Chu also wants us to believe that the VPD had learned its lessons from the ’94 riot and knew what it was doing last night even though media reports show a different story.

To cap it off, the media (same as politicians) accept no blame what-so-ever for encouraging 100,000+ people to come to the down town core as if they are surprised when one whips up fervour there are no already proven consequences.

NDP policy resolution to “boycott apartheid Israel”

Oh look, more nutty proposals which have made it to NDP convention in Vancouver this weekend:

-  “campaign for an end to the rule of apartheid laws that make Israeli Arabs and Palestinians second- and third-class citizens under occupation.”

- demanding solidarity with Cuba “encourage party members to visit the island” and to demand “an end to the U.S. embargo.”

- repealing the Clarity Act “that the right to self-determination implies that the [National Assembly of Quebec] is able to write a referendum question and that the citizens of Quebec are able to answer it freely.”

- nationalizing US companies because of the “failed capitalist system” that has “squandered untold wealth.”

Meanwhile the Ottawa Press for the most part look the other way or more than likely, agree. (see here)
