The National Post’s Jonathan Kay smells a rat with a fundraising letter sent out by the Liberal environmental critic Kirsty Duncan:
It sounds made up. I’m not claiming it is made up. But it really does sound like the kind of dialogue a pair of grade 6 students would write for their Environmental Studies role-playing broadcast media project. (see here)
Wouldn’t it be considered fraudulent to solicit money based on a falsehood?

[...] UPDATE: Dean asks, “Wouldn’t it be considered fraudulent to solicit money based on a falsehood?” [...]

Well, I can’t believe the only thing a ten year old child in Bangladesh would know all that much about Canada or be so well informed about environmental policies here. If the Liberals want to gain back some credibility they won’t do it with this sort of freaky stuff.

You are right, of course she would most likely even have trouble knowing where Canada is. I recall my students when I worked and lived abroad who were far from stupid but what little idea they had about Canada was incorrect. The most difficult thing for most foreigners is understanding that we are not American. It isn’t that I find it insulting, but it is an indication of their ignorance of Canada.

Soliciting money based on a falsehood would surely be fraudulent but, as far out and unbelievable as it is, the catch is how can it be proven?

Absoutely frigging hilarious! Was the mythical 10 year old Bangledesh girl channeling David Suzuki?
This from the idiot’s who signed Canada into the Kyoto fraud and then did absouletly nothing for 12 years.
Of course then there was Steffi Dion and his green shift “it weel be good for yew”
he sounded like a desperate guy at closing time in a bar trying way too hard to get hooked up.
Liberals “fund raising” too funny.
Cheers Bubba

I’d suggest a serious investigation into the Organization being shilled by the ever irrepressible Ms Duncan.

Take a hard look at Bangladesh. Three rivers converge in its boundaries: the Ganges, Jamuna, and Meghina Rivers. It’s not just built up on a flood plain, it’s built up on a recently-formed delta. Indeed, the country grows as the rivers bring loads of silt down from the mountains and dump them in the Bay of Bengal.
I don’t know how old the woman is who penned this appeal, but she is incredibly ignorant of the reality of Bangladesh. It’s an impoverished country whose inhabitants live to a large extent on the border between land and sea. Ever since the country gained independence from Pakistan, there have been stories of its tenuous situation and the instability, geographically speaking. This young girl may be finding the wells are salty, but I’d be inclined to blame local industrial wells pumping out groundwater rather than Canada’s CO2 production.

There’s an old rural saying that goes,” If you don’t here a rumour by ten o’clock(am)…then start one”.
As the ‘vernacular’ clearly points out in Stephen Leacock fashion, ‘ keep the tongue in the cheek…and make it interesting’.
Another more fitting perhaps was, ” there’s a definite line between a good story and an outright lie”.
We’ve all been around long enough to know where ms Duncan’s feeble attempt lies.
Johnathan Kay; you are far too polite.

As frightening as it is to think of the Mulcair NDP attaining power they remain the only alternative. This little tale tells us the Liberals have nobody minding the store. Having people like Duncan and Doc Bennett or Hedy Fry spouting off will only add to their woes.
