There’s an internal fight brewing over BC Conservative leader John Cummins which BC blogger Alex Tsakumis has the low-down on (see here) and besides the plain unhappiness with his leadership, is the fat pay-cheque he’s arranged for himself.
I have confirmed with another party source that Cummins is indeed being paid $4,000 per month from the BC Conservative Party.
This is from a party that only managed to collect $125,000 for the entire 2011 fiscal year and the $48,000 a year would be on top of his federal MP pension.
I guess keeping one’s daughter in show horses can be really expensive and a guy might need a second source of income to maintain that big property of his.
Wasn’t there a Reform policy position on double-dipping MPs?

Should he work for free?

There’s little evidence of shame anywhere anymore, least of all in politics. $4000.00 bucks is more than just beer money, a nice top-off to any pension or other remuneration and way more than a lot of people survive on. Actually it’s enough to make party donors put away their cheque books.

And it’s almost 40% of all the money collected by the Cons for the entire year.

Aw, I hate to see infighting in the BCCP ranks. $4000/mo is less than a campaign manager makes. I don’t actually have a problem with proper remuneration of politicians and would-be politicians for their work.

Cummins is not destitute by any means. The key words are “proper remuneration” and ensuring the membership is fully aware of these kinds of payments. Hiding it in a secret board vote is not the way to go about it.

Now the way I see it, if he really wants the party to get off the ground he should suffer a little financially to help the cause. $4,000 every month sure isn’t helping the BC Conservatives. To think my donation goes right into his pocket and not the party makes me a little disturbed.
When I started a company, I took pittance at first as he should also. Rewards will come later.

And what does that say to the volunteers as well?

The BC Cons are done like dinner and we get to look forward to 5 years of the NDP starting next spring. Sask is starting to look pretty good.

It looks more and more like we’re going to be hamstrung with a commie, french language activist as Premier… Comrade Dix. BC is in big trouble.
