Another Green Party covert operation helped along by willing media?

This article by the radio station CKNW (Christy Clark’s prior employer) on the “watch-dog group” Integrity BC efforts to stop political party donations from unions and corporations piqued my curiosity as it’s an issue I’d love to see happen here in BC.

But after being burnt by OpenMedia in February (see here) I’ve become very wary of these self-proclaimed “democratic/non-partisan/grass-roots” groups so I Googled the contact person given in the story, Dermod Travis after checking out their very nice and expensive looking website.

Turns out Travis was the former Communications Director for the Green Party of Canada and is featured extensively on the website greenpartystrategy.com which lists itself as:

“a website dedicated to helping citizens build successful green parties at the civic, provincial/state and national levels of government”

Now, maybe Travis has all-of-a-sudden become a neutral non-partisan as Integrity BC’s website states (his bio doesn’t include any Green Party info) but that doesn’t excuse the media for not including his past(?) political affiliations.

I have asked CKNW why it failed to list that very important fact in the story and will update when and if I get an answer.

Update: My letter to CKNW

Integrity BC

I am concerned that in your story, you didn’t include the information that Dermod Travis was the former Communications Director for the Green Party of Canada and is featured extensively on the website greenpartystrategy.com which lists itself as:

“a website dedicated to helping citizens build successful green parties at the civic, provincial/state and national levels of government”

Without including this pertinent bio info, your audience wouldn’t have had the opportunity to judge for themselves if this group was truly non-partisan as it claims to be on its website you mention.

Still no apology from CBC to Rob Ford

A day after the CBC was exposed for lying about the content of the 911 call Toronto mayor Rob Ford made, they still haven’t issued an apology.

The only thing that they have put out so far is this article which I noticed them changing the wording where they said that these sources were anonymous. I stupidly didn’t make a screen shot prior to it being wiped clean minutes later, replaced with the current wording where only the Toronto Police Chief refers to the sources in that way.

For a very good read on this, check out the Sun’s Joe Warmington article here in which he tears apart the journalistic ethics used by the CBC and calls for them to produce the evidence that the mayor and police chief are lying and if not:

“the head of the CBC news, the producers who signed off on it and the reporter should all be removed”

Couldn’t agree more.
