Deputy Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador Kathy Dunderdale, speaking on why Premier Danny Williams went to the US for heart surgery said that “Having the surgery done in the province was never an option.”
She would not elaborate what the treatment was that is not available in Newfoundland nor did she say what the average citizen’s option was for those who can’t afford to pay for expensive US surgeries. (see story here)

You’re damned right it’s superior. As are the healthcare systems in Ontario, Alberta, BC, etc., when compared to Eastern Canada, both statistically and anecdotally. Many people from out this way must travel to Toronto in order to receive special treatments, most especially Newfoundlanders.
Good for Danny on exercising his right to choose his own healthcare option, an opportunity afforded to him through the merit of his capital successes (we’re not Liberals after all… are we?). He does what our politicians are supposed to do: he stands up for Newfoundland, but I’m very glad to see he and Harper mending fences.
Speedy recovery, Danny.
