Holy smokes…even Kinsella thinks Jaffer/Guergis is a non-story

I have to write this down somewhere…I totally agree with Warren Kinsella:

“Enough, as they say, is enough. For starters, this “news” story – which even reputable news aggregators have headlined, and which I am only linking to in the hope that you will feel as I do – is a goddamned disgrace. It is disgusting. How, in God’s name, is this anyone’s business other the than the couple in question? How? Shame on the “journalists” who considered this newsworthy.”

Check out the screen shot Kinsella has of the story that ran about Guergis that has now been pulled.

Well, I have to agree with Kinsella too! Hope this doesn’t affect my place in Heaven when I shuffle off.

“The Crown felt it had no choice but to drop charges of cocaine possession and drunk driving against former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer in favour of a guilty plea on a lesser charge, due to how police handled the case, CBC News has learned.”

“According to sources close to the case, police made two fateful decisions: repeatedly denying Jaffer access to his own lawyers and a strip search after he was pulled over on a rural road on Sept. 11 in the southern Ontario community of Palgrave, northwest of Toronto.”

Oh, for ****** sake! We have read too many times of police screwing up a case due to lack of proper procedure. This case wasn’t a big deal, but how often does this happen in important cases, where serious criminals get off?

We had a case here in the Okanagan a few years back where a murder suspect was released outright by the judge due to police mishandling of the investigation. Police maintained they had the right guy, but screwed up the entire case so badly, the judge gave them a public scolding and set the suspect free.

Lucky for Jaffer, unlucky for justice.

I’m speachless! Did Kinsella really right that? Kudos to him if he did.

Almost makes me feel bad for all the nasty things I’ve called him…almost.

“Lucky for Jaffer, unlucky for justice”

I have to disaggree. Yes, it was lucky for Jaffer, but it was also lucky for justice.

Justice was served when the OPP screwed up their investigation of Jaffer by denying him access to his lawyer and strip searching him without a good sound legal reason, and were rewarded by having those charges thrown out before even going to court.

This is very much a success for justice in Canada. Canadian courts are far too prone to ignore such things. There are many cases where the authorities go well beyond their legal mandate and the court’s response is “OK, but we are here now, so let’s get on with it.” This attitude by the courts only furthers the likelyhood that the police will push the boundarys of the charter and the law.

When a case such as Jaffer’s is thrown out, it protects us all from abuse by the police. And that is justice for us all.

Unfortunately for them (or fortunately if you are delighted at the notion) the media skunks and bully MP’s will pay for this public hanging.
The fact that WK decided enough is enough seemed to be based on the personal disclosure and media frenzy of health issues experienced by the battered MP and most civilized people would concur. MORE civilized people would have recognized it, weeks ago.

I have imagined a mature, responsible and civil Liberal leader in the halls of the HoC acting in the above mentioned way and cannot help but think that would have garnered him some movement in popularity and in the polls.
However he appears to have orchestrated and encouraged the wolf pack behaviour from his scrappy cubs and now there is no going back. I hope that the lawsuits for defamation fly all over Ottawa and he is the first.

Kinsella is not as stupid as he looks and realizes that what goes around in politics, comes around. I would hardly think that it’s all milk and honey in LiberalLand.

  6. dmorris Says:

JP, of course, you’re right. Justice for us all is better served by the cops having to adhere to the letter of the law.

    My mistake.

    • Jim Pook Says:

No problem. The rest of your post was excellent. In fact, the line I quoted and addressed was actually quite good and correct depending how you defined it.

  7. byng Says:

hmmmm – methinks Mr K perhaps is a bit unhappy that this story looks somewhat better for the Jaffer/Geurgis camp – and , of course, he would like to get back some mud he has been flinging at Harper and the CPC for the last while – as Dief used to say …………..

  8. wilson Says:

Well now that Helena has a lawyer , Kinsella was just warning the troops…zip it.

Notice how Iffy used all the noise to hide his 100% flip flp on Charest’s user fees…..12 days ago he rushed to a mic in support of Charest’s budget,
today he re ‘clarified’ that he doesn’t support Charest’s move.

And he has the nerve to question PMSHs judgement. pfff

HArper keeping secrets is hardly news.

  10. Rose Says:

I wonder how female Classical Liberals’ feel watching the Liberal Party smear that women based on third party alligations, rumour and inuendo?? I think Iggy is going to pay dearly at the polls, the public has been once again over saturated with liberal outrage and they’ve disengaged and the anger will be hurled at the liberal party.

I’ve never seen such a media frenzy over rumours in my leftime, I’ve come to despise MSM outlets.

  11. real conservative Says:

There are some liberals that I do have respect for and Warren is one of them. I’ve said this out loud before too. I also like Hebert. Don’t often agree with them but they have more gray matter than many liberals especially when it comes to the bottom line. I wonder how long Kinsella thinks Iggy has left? The clock is ticking.

  12. Calgary Junkie Says:

Attack politcs is an extremely tricky thing. If you go too far, there is a backlash, and you may end up apologizing. Many examples of that, but my favorite is the pooping puffin.

If the puffin had pooped on the ground, instead of on Dion’s shoulder, then it would have been OK. But our war room mocked Dion just a bit too much, and Harper had to apologize.

  13. Jim Pook Says:

This is the problem the Liberals have right now. They are so deperate to get back into power and control the countries finances that they are throwing mud in every direction in the vain hope that some of it, any of it will stick.

It does not look good on them. They really need to dial it back a bit. It’s one thing to bring it up, but once done, drop it and move on to the next issue. To keep pounding on this one issue just makes them look petty and sleazy. Not that that is much of a stretch for the Liberals.

  14. wilson Says:

”…HArper keeping secrets is hardly news….”

And that aa, is why Harper has been the Prime Minister for 4 years and 3 months,
and Iffy is at 16% confidence with Canadians.

It’s called loyalty, reliability and maturity.
Being ‘secretive’ is essential when you are privy to all the information a Prime Minister learns.

  15. ck Says:

So, Wilson, I guess you don’t care about transparent and accountable government, as long as it’s Harper your hero, right?

Wonder if you would be this understanding of the Liberals or another opposition party decides not to divulge any of their secrets?

  16. Peter B Says:

Ignatieff’s juvenile antics are even starting to p–s of Don Martin of National Post and that takes some doing. In his column Martin takes a swipe a Ignatieff’s character and writes

“…Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff now refers to Helena Guergis as “Mrs. Jaffer,” a cheap tactic to smear a woman who goes by her maiden name. Perhaps Conservatives should refer to Mr. Ignatieff as Mr. Zsohar, given that his wife Zsuzsanna goes by the name on her birth certificate, but having met her I’d say her name would link to a character improvement…’
