Trudeau charged $20,000 for speech at event that included NDP and Conservative speakers

Yesterday, Liberal leader Justin Trudeau tried lamely to claim that he never charged for a speech as a MP:

“While speaking as an MP, I’ve never charged anyone a single penny.” (see here)

Unfortunately for the Liberals, that has now proven to be a lie:

Justin Trudeau’s claim that he has “never charged anyone a single penny” while speaking as an MP, has been leapt upon by the Conservatives, who say he was paid $20,000 to speak at a conference three years ago alongside representatives from the NDP and Conservative party, who were not paid.

According to the list of speaking engagements that he released, Mr. Trudeau was paid $20,000 by OPSEU to speak at the conference on that day. The union confirmed Friday that neither Mr. Goodyear nor Ms. Nash was paid. (see here)

Trudeau is not only busted for the lie, he is also guilty of breaking the MP’s ethics rules.

This is a man who aspires to lead the country?
Looks like one of two things, he’s being micro managed to the point he has no clue whether he’s being paid for speaking appearances or not or he’s lying.
Can anyone imagine this dude winging it on our behalf with World leaders? Enough to give you nightmares.

    $20,000 is not a single penny…

I wonder what was going on in the House that day.
It would be kind of nteresting to see if there was a vote or anything….

  4. Stan Says:

So he says getting paid while speaking as an MP is wrong.
Is it just wrong, or is it illegal?

  5. Thucydides Says:

Bet the media will be all over this, constant coverage, in depth investigation of every speaking engagement the Young Dauphin ever did, looking at the board members who signed off on these payments, determining if this was a way of bypassing campaign and political financing rules….

What’s that I hear from the media?

    Crickets chirping…..

So now he has both feet in his mouth, his dad would be proud.

Did Union give laundered political contribution to Trudeau by paying only him for speaking?

    • Liz J Says:

Have to wonder if the unions figure he’s the one most likely to bend to their wishes so they’re going to support him in every way they can. Maybe every way the law allows…or doesn’t?

Trudeau has yet to impress anyone as to being an honest, caring individual. What charity work has he done without charging cash? During his brief stint as a teacher did he do any extracurricular activities? When he stood onstage with two other M.P.’s was his presentation different enough from the others so as to negate any misunderstanding that he wasn’t speaking as an M.P.? Will he give back the entire amount of cash he collected from charities ( many with liberal connections) even though he’s yet to be asked?

Alarm bells need to be going off and an indepth investigation into how and why ethic commisioner Mary Dawson gave Justin! The green light to charge unions and charities huge amounts to speak?????
Why is the ethic commissioner giving only Liberals her blessing on any and all requests ?

    • BC Blue Says:

If she did, she should do the honourable thing and resign

    • Liz J Says:

Yeah, Justin has put the onus on her to come forward and tell us if what he has said is fact. If true she must explain what the rules are. Are they loose enough to allow politicians to follow their own judgement for such matters?

Mary Dawson is a long time Conservative, worked for Mulroney way back when, appointed as CC in 2007 by Harper. Who knows why she seems to favor Liberals, she certainly has the credentials for the job.

      • BC Blue Says:

Harper’s appointments have been less than stellar

        • Liz J Says:

I agree, he has created himself a peck of problems with some very bad pickings.

        • Clary Says:

That may be the biggest understatement ever. Most of the appointments have been horrible. Harper needs some adult politically savvy advisers and quick.

On another note, here in Montreal there have been two letters to the editor in the Gazette. Both defending Trudoh and slagging Harper. But this is nothing surprising as the editors of the Gazette can’t stand the Conservatives. Twice a week there are anti Conservative local columns and not once have I seen a Conservative rebuttal. The war room is asleep.

        • BC Blue Says:

Yes, I was being extremely kind 😉 Just about every single issue or scandal has come via these appointments.

I’m wondering if the Ethics Commishes’ office is required to make detailed verbatim notes (minutes) of all cases that cross the desk as well as details of recommendations etc. If this detailed info is not available due to privacy concerns, then it is time for that to change.
Anything to do with ethics and MP’s,(can that be said in the same sentence?!!)…should be public knowledge .

  11. Stan Says:

Would it be okay with the media meatheads if a conservative was to charge an oil company a couple of million bucks for a one hour speech?
If it’s okay for Justin to pimp himself out to the unions surely it would be okay for a conservative to pimp themselves out to an oil company, no?

  12. Peter Says:

Or is Trudeau just inept or incompetent for prime time?

Yesterday Trudeau said ( he wasn’t being quoted ) but in his own words and voice

“While speaking as an MP I have never charged anyone a single penny – I never took a cent. I never charged a cent of anyone as an MP or while an MP”

That is the quote in its’ entirety nothing deleted or added – exactly as he said it. There is no wiggle room for fees paid “while an MP”.
This statement is not one given on the spur of the moment, or when ambushed with a question, but the subject has been discussed for days – his answer was deliberate and as forthright as one would expect.
The problem for Trudeau is that the answer is a lie.
I expect Canadians should be alerted to this naked truth by the fact and truth finding media.
